But God has given church leadership teams some guidelines which will help them avoid some drastic errors. The guidance is found in the spiritual character of the prospective pastor, his ministry qualifications, and his heart. The procedures and processes are secondary.
It is the one who works hard at teaching and preaching. An elder who has the responsibility of teaching and preaching but forsakes that responsibility in order to excel in administration is not “especially” worthy of double honor. An elder who teaches and preaches is not necessarily worthy of double honor either, but the one who excels and works hard at teaching and preaching is worthy of double honor. The Greek word for “work hard” has the idea of being physically, mentally, and emotionally weary from study. Now that is working hard! To work only ten hours a week at digging in the sacred book is not working very hard.
Today, too many kindhearted but misdirected churches and seminaries allow men to become pastors who should not be in the ministry. Many pastors are spiritually immature even though they completed their seminary training and they have a poor grasp of Scripture. They know the systematic theology taught by the seminary they attended, but they cannot and do not know all of the Bible. It is impossible in a three year seminary course of study to have been taught all sixty six books of the Bible in depth.
